Dear and valued friends and customers,
The following news will not come as a surprise for many of you who visited the nursery frequently and who were witness to the upsurge of construction all around us, the diesel and dust chaos which is the main reason we made the decision to pull up our deeply sunk roots from the soil we lovingly toiled on for so many years, the organically, perfectly restored gravelly sandy soil on which Free Spirit Nursery had its home for 25 years.
This does not mean that we are shutting the gate right away. Until we actually sell, which might take a while, or even might not happen at all, we will continue with the nursery business as before during this Fall Season and for sure through the Spring of 2021 and by then we’ll have a better idea of timelines and you’ll stay informed.
This Brookswood/Fernridge neighbourhood’s planning is slated to add to the current population approximately 30.000 people over the next 25 years. Our 32nd Ave is planned to become a 4 lane arterial road within that period of time at which point we will loose a significant part of our retail and stock area. The associated construction with the building of high-density neighborhoods and its infrastructure, as well as the destruction of the natural surroundings here, is something we’d rather not witness anymore. The construction of a new storm sewer alongside our property during the last 12 months gave us a very clear example of what is still to come (and go)... Yes, Free Spirit will never be the same again and we don’t know what it will morph into yet but there will be something for sure, we will let you know when all the moving dust has settled.
After selling, we, and in good time together also Lambert’s parents, will set our sails to our future location. That is, if we survive the move ;-) We’ve pondered a lot and we’re still open but we’d prefer the Qualicum area or Saltspring Island. We are planning to spend a lot of time on our first love, off-the-grid Lasqueti Island. Perfect would be a larger property that has character, natural beauty, good water to drink and to garden with, possibly even have a water view and it has to be close to walking trails. Nature conservation is our main life’s motive and we will be good stewards of any land. If you know of any parcel you think would suit our needs, please let us know.
We really hope you’ll be understanding and supportive of our move and we are looking very much forward to seeing you here at Free Spirit Nursery this year and also the next. We promise that our quality will not be affected. Maybe wrap up a picnic in a checkered cloth, bring a friend or two and enjoy an Al fresco lunch here. Meanwhile, please stay safe and keep on gardening, because, like a kind gentleman here once told us: ”After all, we’re built for it.”
Warmest,
Marjanne, Lambert and our dedicated and awesomely loyal Free Spirit Crew

Hello XXXXXX,
We hope you are keeping well.
A personal note to inform you of our recent decision just in case you are not signed up to our newsletter.
As a result, 2020 will be our last season for sending plants by mail order.
Thank you so much for years of supporting our nursery.
Other nurseries that might be of interest to you and which still operate mail order are: Phoenix Perennials in Richmond BC, Fraser’s Thimble Farms on Salt Spring Island (fall and winter shipping only), The Carniverous Plant Store on Salt Spring Island.
With warm regards,
Lambert and Marjanne

Dear friends and customers, Happy Spring 2021!
Since our last News release, physically nothing much has changed here. The property has not sold yet and is currently actually off market and after the Spring season is over, we will re-assess. We are much too busy now to wrap our heads around a move!
Our exciting news is the launch of our Illustrated Manual (online version only) with the incredible help and perseverance of Dante Baies. The illustrated version matches our spiral bound 5th edition manual, showing each page with matching photographs. Over the course of the season we will photograph the plants which are still missing in action.
Our Fall season’s dates are not yet set, for a number of reasons. Fall opening times will be different than in previous years. The best way stay tuned on that is by checking our website for updated information.
We are very much looking forward to this spring season and because of our moving plans we have put in extra effort to offer a number of plants from our gardens that we have never offered before. This includes some plants not listed in our current Plant List. These offerings will find their way throughout Spring into the Collector’s Corner. We have more choices than ever. Regular visits are advised!
Unfortunately the Garden Walks are once more suspended until further notice.
Since March we have welcomed two wonderful new ladies to the nursery: Rochelle and Kathy, and also we are thrilled and grateful with the continued volunteer help from Dante, Andreea, Marilyn and Tom as well as from three new volunteers: Diana, Karen and Colin. Without all their fantastic help our sanity would be doubtful especially Marjanne’s who’s been slowly recovering from a really bad (and badly timed) double sprain.
We look forward to seeing you at the nursery. We will just mention the words “Bonnie Henry” and you’ll know what to bring and what to do.
Thank you so much for your continued support!
Lambert and Marjanne

A long awaited superior form selected from Sanguinaria canadensis ‘Tennessee Form’ seedlings. Each clean, white flower has 18 to 25 petals, and is 3+ inches across. A strong grower, it quickly forms a dense, prolifically flowered clump, spreading by thick, fleshy rhizomes, 2-6" per year. Blooms for a longer time than the fleeting native form. 5-5.5” tall in bloom, to 12”. It is fertile and produces seed. This clone also seems to holds its foliage longer than the other types before going dormant in summer. A true beacon of white in the early spring garden. $25
